Vijay-starrer Beast banned in Kuwait. Will Malaysia suit?

Vijay-starrer Beast has landed in controversy a week before its release. Directed by Nelson Kumar, produced by Sun Pictures and co-starring Pooja Hegde, the film has been banned in Kuwait. The ban has created quite a stir not only in the Tamil industry but across India. It is believed that the ban has been imposed because the film contains scenes depicting Islamists as extremists.

Film and trade analyst Ramesh Bala announced on Twitter on Tuesday that “the animal has been banned by the Ministry of Information in Kuwait.” He added that, while there was no official word on whether the film was banned in Kuwait, “the reason could be Pakistan, its depiction of terrorism or violence.”

Kuwait has already banned Indian films like the recently released Group and FIR. However, Beast has been approved for release in the Gulf countries of UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain. Coming back to the ban, it raises the fear of additional countries banning the film, citing the reason for its depiction of Islamic terrorism. All eyes are now on Malaysia as the country has a history of banning or imposing some restrictions on Indian films.

Kamal Haasan had a tough time with the Malaysian authorities when they banned his film Vishwaroopam. It was released on the first day but the screening was immediately stopped. The reason cited for this is that Islamists are being portrayed as extremists.

Even Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali’ had a sad experience with Malaysia. The film, which was shot almost entirely in Malaysia, saw over thirty censorship cuts in the country, claiming that it portrayed the country as a place full of violent thugs, including drugs, kidnapping and violence. There were high level scenes attached to it.

After Kuwait banned the Beast, there are fears that Malaysia may impose a similar ban on the film. If this happens then it will be a big setback for the makers. Since Malaysia and Singapore are trading areas, the film industry is eagerly waiting for the country’s decision.
