Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir said that off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s selection in the team for the Men’s T20 World Cup gives an entirely new dimension to the Indian team. He said that Ashwin is a quality cricketer who should have played more white-ball cricket.
Ashwin last played a T20 International against West Indies in July 2017 and has since been overlooked in this format. With Washington Sundar unavailable due to a finger injury, it opened doors for Ashwin to make it into the 15-man squad.
“Very happy for Ashwin. Perhaps, he shouldn’t have been out of white-ball cricket anyway, and now he’s back. You have to give it to the selectors and they have bought it back. It gives you a whole new dimension,” Gambhir said in a special T20 World Cup team episode on Follow The Blues Show on Star Sports on Thursday.
“He is someone who can bowl with the new ball, he is someone who can bowl in the middle overs, he is someone who can bowl at the death too – if he gets the game, it depends on the situation. Is. To me, he is a quality cricketer who should have played more white-ball cricket than he has played,” Gambhir said.
The 39-year-old batsman was all praise for Suryakumar Yadav’s place in the squad for the T20 World Cup and explained how Yadav is better than Shreyas Iyer, who was kept in reserve.
