New Delhi: BJP MP Varun Gandhi criticized the decision of several states, including Uttar Pradesh, to impose night curfew amid rising cases of Omicron, while not banning large-scale public rallies.

Varun Gandhi, who has been targeting his party over several issues in the past months, said it should be decided whether “our priority is to prevent the disease or show strength during elections”.

Varun Gandhi tweeted, “Imposing curfew at night and calling lakhs of people in rallies during the day – this is beyond common man’s comprehension.”

“Keeping in mind the limited health infrastructure of Uttar Pradesh, it will have to be decided honestly whether our priority is to contain the dreaded Omicron version of the coronavirus or show power during elections,” he added. .

Varun Gandhi said that maximum transmission of COVID-19 occurs during the day as there are less people on the road during night time. The BJP MP urged everyone to refrain from participating in social gatherings that may emerge as Covid-19 clusters.

Assembly elections will be held in five states- Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa in February-March next year.

He cited a March 2021 memorandum from the Center to the Maharashtra government stating that measures such as night curfew and weekend lockdown had little effect on controlling or suppressing the Covid-19 transmission.
