Differently-abled students of BHU started protesting near the VC residence from the same day demanding the re-arrest of Rai on charges of molestation and resignation of the Chief Proctor.

Students of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have been protesting outside the Vice Chancellor’s residence since Friday evening regarding the molestation of a blind girl student. Against the misbehavior of the police, the students have now started protesting at the Singh Gate of the university.

The protesters claim that Ajay Mishra, a visually impaired student, fell ill on Saturday night, following which he was admitted to the hospital during the protest. BHU Chief Proctor Professor Abhimanyu Singh has claimed that he is not aware of the hospitalization and said that despite several talks, the protesters refused to call off the agitation.

On January 24, a differently-abled student of BA (first year) alleged that the accused Aseem Kumar Rai gave her a lift from the hostel to the Arts Faculty, took her to agricultural land and started molesting her. Later he was caught by the people around and handed over to the staff of the Proctorial Board.

Later, the police registered a case and sent him to jail, however, on January 27, Rai got bail and was released from jail. Demanding the re-arrest of Rai and the resignation of the chief proctor, differently-abled students of the university started protesting near the VC residence from the same day itself. The protesters alleged that Rai was the son of a BHU academician, and thus he was booked under bailable sections of the IPC.

Meanwhile, on the night of January 22, a speeding car hit the students riding a bike near the Vice Chancellor’s residence in BHU. After this the car riders left from there. However, after some time the students caught the crashed car and handed it over to the local police station. The students had also made a written complaint about this.

Pallav, a student of BHU, said that six days after the incident, instead of registering a case, the police let the car go after taking the money. The students demand that the police seize the car back. Until the police registers a case in this matter and takes action, the students’ agitation will continue.

Top officials of the university along with top police officers are trying to convince the students. But, the question is why the police did not take any action on the complaint of the students in this matter and why the accident vehicle was allowed to go. However, the Lanka Police is refraining from speaking anything in this matter.
