Vadodara, July 15 (IANS)| A businessman in Vadodara has received three to four video and audio calls threatening to kill him and his family if he does not pay Rs 11 crore as security deposit.Manoj Sadhani, who runs a chain of saree stores under the Thakur Saree brand name, in his complaint to the police said, “On July 11, I received a WhatsApp audio call, in which the caller identified himself as Anil alias Anthony. I recognized and threatened to kill me. Me and my family members if we don’t pay them Rs 11 crore. The caller was not ready to hear about my financial condition and kept demanding ransom.
The caller also warned the complainant that “If you are diagnosed with cancer or kidney problem, will you not get treatment? I know you are using Fortuner car, how your financial condition is weak can you?”
The caller told Sadhnani that he, his wife and son were arrested in the counterfeit currency case, but he successfully escaped from police custody and is now in hiding. The complainant said that he needed Rs 50 lakh to be acquitted in the fake currency case, while another Rs 50 lakh was needed for him to flee the country.
The caller then made a video call on July 12, in which he identified himself as Ravi Devjani, a resident of Dajinagar.
Police said the complaint was registered on Thursday night and investigation has just begun.
A case has been registered against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code on charges of extortion, use of abusive words, criminal intimidation etc.
