Uzbekistan has arrested four people in an investigation into the deaths of 19 children who consumed cough syrup made by Indian drugmaker Marion Biotech, the Uzbekistan State Security Service said on Friday.

Two of those detained were senior employees of the Scientific Center for Standardization of Medicines, who had bypassed proper testing procedures for Doc-1 Max cough syrup.

Two others were executives of Curamax Medical Company, which imported Marion Biotech drugs.

Marion Biotech said last month shortly after the series of deaths that it had stopped production of the syrup.

Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health stated that the syrup contained a toxic substance, ethylene glycol, and was given to children in amounts higher than the standard dose, either by their parents, who took it for an anti-cold remedy or Took on the advice of the pharmacist.

Uzbekistan’s case comes after the death of at least 70 children in The Gambia, which a parliamentary committee linked to cough and cold syrups made by New Delhi-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals. The company denied any wrongdoing and Indian government inspectors found no contamination in the test samples.
