Sources said Uttarakhand is seeking a complete ban on polygamy and registration of live-in couples under the UCC and is planning to hold a special session of the assembly to table the draft

Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday said the draft of the Uniform Civil Code for the state is in its last stage. He said the government is trying to complete the process on a priority basis. “We have already said that as we will get the draft of the UCC committee, whose draft is in the last process, we will try to complete the further process sooner,” he added.

According to sources, Uttarakhand is seeking a complete ban on polygamy and registration of live-in couples. The Dhami-led government is planning to hold a special session of the assembly to table the draft Uniform Civil Code, which was prepared earlier this year by a committee formed by the chief minister. He did so soon after coming to power for a second consecutive term. The committee is headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a common personal law applicable to all Indian citizens, not based on religion and covers marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and so on.

A UCC for the state was one of the major poll promises of the BJP in the run-up to the assembly elections last year.
