The Kedarnath Yatra has been suspended at Sonprayag in Uttarakhand due to heavy rains continuing in Rudraprayag district, officials announced on Wednesday. Keeping in view the well-being of the yatris, the administration stopped yatris at Sonprayag and Gaurikund due to continuous inclement weather. 4 state roads and 10 link roads are closed due to rain debris. Officials said that the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers are in flood due to heavy rains.

Amid heavy rains in Uttarakhand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday gave an orange alert for July 12. IMD shared in a tweet, “Orange Alert: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) very likely over #Uttarakhand & adjoining areas of West #UttarPradesh on 12th July.”

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday said that the state administration is on full alert in view of heavy rain warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in the region.

Discussing the prudent planning made in the state, CM Dhami said, “Here we have to face normal calamities continuously during the rains. Excessive rainfall causes landslides and rise in river levels. We are in high alert mode.” Disaster management personnel and all district administration officials are working. Every one of them has been contacted to be ready to face whatever is happening. Our other organizations are also working on this. NDRF, Armed Forces and our PWD office are working. We are ready to face whatever is happening and we are constantly in touch with people to help them in any situation.”

Rain continues in Uttarakhand, nine killed

On Tuesday, nine people were killed and 13 were injured when debris fell near Gangnani on the Gangotri National Highway in Uttarakhand. Incessant heavy rains have almost damaged the state infrastructure and some routes including national highways have been closed due to regular avalanches, affecting the ongoing ‘Char Dham Yatra’.

The weather office has predicted heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday and urged the state administration to take adequate precautions.
