Prayagraj: Four years ago, when a close relative died due to proper menstrual hygiene and inadequate hygiene, Vandana Singh Wasted no time in starting the fight to spread awareness among rural women on the issue of saving lives.
She started distributing sanitary pads among women in rural areas and now distributes 500 to 1,000 pads once a week.
Vandana, an English lecturer, Chandra Shekhar Azad Inter College, Puravnara, (Soraon), devotes all his free time to his mission. Wherever she goes, she takes sanitary pads with her and distributes them among women. So far, it has distributed over 1.25 lakh sanitary pads and aims to touch the 5 lakh mark.

“Cleanliness and hygiene are very important for women during menstruation and it can be a matter of life and death. Lack of proper hygiene during menstruation can lead to serious illness,” said Vandana.
“When I started distributing sanitary pads among rural women, people used to make fun of me. I continued to tell rural women about menstrual hygiene and gave them free sanitary pads.”
“Women and girls in rural areas are still not aware of menstrual hygiene and are suffering. We need to spread awareness,” Vandana said.
Vandana recalls, “When I started counseling women, some people also made lewd comments and said that ‘a woman does such things’. “But I did not lose heart and continued my work and gradually succeeded in my efforts,” she said.
He also bought five sewing machines to train girls and women to make sanitary pads and become self-reliant.
