After another round of cajoling, the monkey started tossing down the notes. Now it was Sharma’s turn to plead in front of the cheering crowd, who were trying to pocket the money. After much persuasion, people collected the money and gave it to Sharma, who was still nervous and sweating.
After more than 30 minutes of high-drama, the advocate was able to collect Rs 95,000. There was no trace of the remaining Rs 5,000, but Sharma was “happy”.
The video of the monkey was shot by some people, who later shared it on social media platforms. In October 2019, a similar incident was reported from Badaun district where two monkeys snatched a bag from a woman and rained money on people.
Sharma said, ‘I got the shock of my life when the monkey snatched my bag and climbed on the neem tree. There were two lakh rupees in the bag, which I had taken from a client for stamp. Then the monkey took out two bundles of 50-50 thousand rupees from the bag and threw the bag.
“When we tried to chase him, he climbed the upper branch of the tree and started raining money. I was looking helplessly and was requesting people to return the money. I managed to get back Rs 95,000 from people. I don’t blame anyone for the remaining Rs 5,000 as most of the people were trying to help me. I haven’t filed any complaint.”
Affan Ahmed, an eyewitness told TOI, “I shot the video while Sharma along with other advocates was trying to get the money back from the monkey. Sharma also took the risk and tried to climb the tree from the tin roof. He also slipped twice as the surface was slippery due to rain. After 30 minutes, Sharma was able to get most of his money back. The monkeys often snatch the bags of the people who come to the court premises in Shahabad. In 2018, a monkey snatched five thousand rupees from a clerk.
