Uttar Pradesh: Akhilesh Yadav hints he may contest 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Kannauj | Kanpur News – Times of India

KANPUR: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday dropped broad hints that he may contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Kannauj.
On a personal visit to Kannauj to attend a wedding, Akhilesh was talking to the media when, responding to a question as to why the party fielded Dimple Yadav from Mainpuri, Akhilesh said in the next elections he, too, can be in the fray.
Asked if he plans to contest from Kannauj, he said, “What will I do otherwise? I will contest the election. Our job is to contest elections. I will fight from where I contested for the first time. The party will take the final call about it.”
Akhilesh, presently MLA from Mainpuri’s Karhal, also said that Kannauj is his “karmabhoomi” and the people of Kannauj have elected him as MP thrice.
He said that the people here have always given him affection and love. “Therefore, I can never leave Kannauj. Also, we brought several developmental projects to Kannauj. So, I will fight elections from here,” he said further.
Attacking the BJP government in the state, he further said that the law and order situation has gone for a toss in the state. “The government’s own people are doing (illegal) mining. When police arrest offenders, BJP openly takes away the accused from the police station,” he said.
Akhilesh had started his political journey in 2000 from the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat itself. He became a Member of Parliament for the first time by winning the by-election on the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat.
After that, in 2004 and 2009 also, he was elected an MP from Kannauj.
After becoming the Uttar Pradesh Cm in 2012, he resigned from the membership of the Lok Sabha.
In 2012, his wife Dimple Yadav won the Kannauj Lok Sabha bye-election. She was again elected MP from Kannauj in the 2014 general elections.
However, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Dimple had to face defeat at the hands of BJP’s Subrata Pathak.
Dimple has now been made the party’s candidate in the bye-election to the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant due to the demise of SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav. Voting for this bypoll will be held on December 5.
