New Delhi: The US has recorded its first Omicron death in Harris County, Texas. The person who succumbed to the new version was a non-vaccinated individual with underlying health conditions.

The news was reported by County Judge Lena Hidalgo, who took to Twitter to announce the details.

“It is sad to report the first local death from the Omicron version of COVID-19. A 50 year old man from the eastern part of Harris County who was not vaccinated,” tweeted the judge.

Hidalgo continued, “Please – get vaccinated and promoted,” urging people to get their COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots.

According to a Reuters report, the US Department of Health issued a statement to announce that the victim was at “high risk of serious complications from COVID-19 because he was unvaccinated.”

According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control, the Omron variant accounts for 73 percent of Covid-19 infections in the US, based on sequencing data for the week ending December 18, Reuters reported.

This is the first ever recorded death due to omicron in the US. Earlier, in December, the UK reported the first global death due to Omicron. Now, the UK death toll has risen to 12, and 104 people are reported to have been hospitalised.
