US: Rare case of monkeypox virus found in Texas resident traveling from Nigeria

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said that a rare case of a person infected with the monkeypox virus has been detected in the US state of Texas.

The CDC said in a press release, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed a case of human monkeypox on July 15 in a US resident who had recently traveled from Nigeria to the United States. did.” on Friday.

The infected person is currently hospitalized in the city of Dallas. The person traveled from Lagos, Nigeria to Dallas, in Atlanta, and health officials are working to contact airline passengers and others who may have had contact with the infected individual, the release said.

According to the CDC, monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral illness that usually begins with a flu-like illness and swelling of the lymph nodes and progresses as a widespread rash on the face and body. Most infections last 2-4 weeks. Monkeypox is in the family of viruses similar to smallpox, but it causes a milder infection.

The CDC believes the spread of monkeypox to other people through respiratory droplets on airplanes and airports is low, the release said.

Prior to the current case, there have been at least six monkeypox cases in travelers returning from Nigeria (including cases in the United Kingdom, Israel and Singapore). The CDC said this case is not related to any of these previous cases.
