US national team forward Katrina Macario injured her anterior cruciate ligament in a match with French club Team Lyon and will miss World Cup qualifying next month.

The two-time defending World Cup champion American Women will play at the CONCACAF W Championship in Monterey, Mexico in July. The tournament determines the region’s four teams for the 2023 World Cup, hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

“Unfortunately, injuries are a natural part of football. It’s never easy to break an ACL, and although I’m devastated to be away from the field and my teammates for a few months, I couldn’t be more proud of my first year as a professional footballer and team.
