Imran Khan removed from the post of PM of Pakistan

Imran Khan has been removed from the post of Prime Minister of Pakistan through a no-confidence motion. The nomination papers for the new prime minister are likely to be submitted today with scrutiny. No prime minister in the history of Pakistan has ever been ousted through a motion of no confidence, nor has anyone completed a full five-year term in office. Leader of the Opposition Shahbaz Sharif, the younger brother of three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has been nominated along with Shah Mehmood Qureshi from Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party. The National Assembly may elect a new PM tomorrow.

booster dose

The Union Health Ministry has announced that all people aged 18 years and above will be allowed to take a booster dose from tomorrow. Initially, it will be available only in private centers and hospitals. Frontline and healthcare workers and those in their 60s will get the dose for free. In addition, there should be a gap of nine months between the second dose and the booster dose. Those who took Covaxin would receive a third dose, and those who received Covashield would receive the same as a booster dose.

SC upheld the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act

The Supreme Court upheld the amendment to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, saying it was necessary in the interest of the security of the country. It said that this act will also protect the sovereignty and integrity of the country. The top court said that taking foreign donations can be completely banned if it undermines the constitutional morality of the country. The recipient of foreign contribution is prohibited from transferring it to any other person. It stipulates that if such contributions are designated as an FCRA account with a specified bank, they can be taken into the account.

French presidential election

The first round of presidential elections has begun in France. 48 million voters will choose between 12 candidates. President Emmanuel Macron is also seeking a second five-year term. The first round of elections is till 7 pm today. If no one is elected with more than half of the total votes, a second and deciding round between the top two candidates will take place on 24 April. Besides Macron, Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon hold the top positions in the presidential seat.

Sri Lanka protest

Thousands marched towards the office of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. This is the biggest protest in the country amid its severe economic crisis. Sri Lanka has seen severe shortages of food, power cuts, fuel shortages and other essentials in the past few weeks. The country’s powerful business community has also started withdrawing support from President Rajapaksa.
