This year the UPSC exam will be held on 28 May.

The Civil Services Examination of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will be held on May 28. This exam gives equal opportunity to all. Candidates preparing for the upcoming examination must go through the exam pattern and syllabus carefully.

UPSC Exam Pattern & Syllabus

There are three stages in this Civil Services Examination. Prelims, Mains and Interview. The preliminary exam consists of objective type questions. Candidates who qualify this exam become eligible for Mains exam. The test consists of questions on essay writing, one language paper, General Studies (GS) and optional subject of the applicant, which he/she has chosen during registration. It is advised to choose the subject as optional in which you are good. Qualified students are called for interview. It consists of a personal test. Various questions are asked to the candidates during this stage.

UPSC Prelims consists of two papers, General Studies I (GS I) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Both the papers are of 200 marks. The exam pattern is multiple choice question based. GS I will have 100 questions while CSAT will have 80 questions. The qualifying criteria for CSAT is 33 percentile.

There are nine theory descriptive/theory papers in the UPSC mains exam. Out of these, 2 papers are for English and regional language. These two papers are mandatory for the contestant to appear. The total marks for both the papers are 300. Paper 1, 2, 3 and 4 are for General Studies. Each paper is of 250 marks. An essay test and 2 papers for the optional subject chosen by the candidate. There are also 250 marks in this.

After qualifying the above mentioned stages of Civil Services Examination, the candidate is called for the interview.

The syllabus for UPSC exam includes Indian Heritage and Culture, World History and Geography and Society Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations, Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Security and Disaster Management, Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude.
