Uproar during VMC school committee election Vadodara News – Times of India

Vadodara: Counting of votes of Municipal Corporation’s Primary Education Committee Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMCThere was a huge uproar on Friday after the saffron party’s candidates won all the eight seats for which elections were held on Friday.
The BJP had earlier won four seats unopposed and polling was to be held for eight seats. Considering the huge majority that the ruling party enjoys in the civic body, it was expected that the party would move forward smoothly.
The BJP had fielded eight candidates while the Congress had fielded only one. The Congress, knowing full well that it had no chance of winning, fought a symbolic battle. While each corporator had to cast eight votes in the election, the BJP has 69 corporators in the civic body. Congress has only seven.
Of the winning candidates, six got 69-69 votes, while two got 68 votes. Congress candidate got 56 votes.
The commotion took place when a councilor had used tick marks and then overwritten them to convert them into cross marks for voting. Ideally, a corporator only has to use the cross mark to vote. Congress objected to this.
When some Congress workers who were not counting agents entered the room, BJP members objected to it. The Congress also objected to the presence of BJP members in the counting hall which led to an argument.
After much debate, it was decided that two votes cast by overwriting would not be considered. This is the reason why two BJP candidates got one vote less than the other six.
For the first time after the BJP came to power in the VMC, it has happened that there is not a single opposition councilor in the school committee of the Municipal Corporation.
