UP elections 2022: Swami Prasad Maurya will join SP, date announced after leaving BJP

New Delhi: Swami Prasad Maurya, who resigned as a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government a day ago, said on Wednesday that he would join Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) on Friday, January 14.

“I will join Samajwadi Party on January 14. I have not received calls from any big or small politician. Had he been alert on time and worked on public issues, the BJP would not have faced this.

Maurya, who joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), on Tuesday resigned as labor minister in the Yogi Adityanath-led state administration, claiming neglect of backward classes.

Following his resignation, the senior politician, a prominent grassroots OBC leader, met former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

After the meeting, Yadav congratulated the former minister by tweeting. However, the SP did not make any official announcement confirming Maurya’s joining the party.

Maurya is expected to be accompanied by at least four MPs who resigned from the BJP in his support. While three of the four resigned at once, the fourth Vinay Shakya was allegedly ‘kidnapped’ by his brother.

However, the police and Shakya himself explained that he was in fact at his Etawah property, and the MLA also expressed his support for Swami Prasad Maurya.
