UP CM launches ‘School Chalo Abhiyan’, aims at 100% student enrollment

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the ‘School Chalo Abhiyan’ here on Monday with an aim to ensure 100% enrollment in primary and upper primary schools across the state. “We have to lay special emphasis on basic education. The campaign is being launched after two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “It may happen that children who have not gone to school are feeling lazy to return. But we have to ensure that no child is left out and everyone is given admission in schools,” Adityanath said while addressing the gathering.

In 2017, 1.34 crore students were enrolled in basic education schools and the situation was “avatha and anarchy” (mismanagement and anarchy), he said. The chief minister said the absence of basic amenities such as mid-day meals, toilets, drinking water, furniture and smart classes “led to a higher dropout rate than admissions”.

Adityanath said that in three years (till 2019) the number of students in schools increased to 1.80 crore and with the efforts of the state government, free books, two uniform sets, shoes, socks and sweaters were provided to the students. He appealed to all, including the officials and public representatives, to engage themselves in ‘Operation Kayakalp’, which aims to give a new look to the schools, and adopt each and every school to provide basic facilities there.

He said that all activities had stopped in 2020 due to the coronavirus lockdown, which affected the schools the most. “Now all activities have resumed. The country’s covid management was appreciated all over the world. We have done more than 30 crore vaccines. We are providing free tablets and smartphones to the students,” the chief minister said, adding that education is the only way to change the society and make the country stronger.

He said that the campaign would continue for the next one month, with the aim of bringing each and every student back to their school. According to an official statement released on Sunday, the chief minister had earlier directed the officials that priority should be given to districts with low literacy rate and that primary schools in the state should be equipped with better facilities.

According to the release, the School Chalo campaign is being started from Shravasti district, which has the lowest literacy rate in the state, followed by Bahraich, Balrampur, Badaun and Rampur. Adityanath also directed that all government schools should provide basic facilities like toilets, drinking water, furniture and smart classes to the students.

He said that the departmental officers should launch a campaign to collaborate with alumni (of government schools) and private firms for the transformation of government schools under ‘Operation Kaylap’. Adityanath said that instructions have also been issued to the basic education department to gear up for the ‘campaign’ and ensure deployment of teachers in all government schools.
