UP boy scores 100 percentile in JEE Main ‘without preparation’, cracks IISc too, now aims at IITs

Soumitra Garg is the only candidate from Uttar Pradesh who has scored 100 percentile Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, Despite being one of 14 students from across the country to score this mark, Garg still feels that his goal is yet to be achieved. He is now aiming to crack the IIT entrance exam – JEE Advanced. The 19-year-old has already cleared the entrance exam for KVPY – IISc Bangalore.

Kishori calls JEE Main an easy exam. He said that he managed to score 100 percentile in engineering entrance without much preparation. “I did not focus on JEE Main. I am preparing for IIT entrance exam – JEE Advanced since last two years. There are only a few chapters which are different in JEE Main and Advanced. Since Advance is a better difficulty exam, clearing the concepts for it helped me prepare for Mains. I didn’t pay much attention to it as my main aim has always been to get a seat in an IIT,” he said.

Even though there is still one attempt left for JEE Main, the Meerut-boy will not take the chance to improve his score and continue his hard work for IIT. Though he is yet to decide which IIT he wants to study in, he is clear about his subject choice – Computer Science. He said that he likes physics and he loves maths and BTech CS can provide the best of both.

For his IIT training, he has been studying with FIITJEE Meerut for two years. Now with around 1.5 months left for JEE Advanced, Garg said that he wants to dedicate his time to IIT preparation. He used to do yoga, wrote poetry and short stories, and read novels. He was also interested in watching and playing cricket, however, he has given up all his habits for now and aims to continue after joining the college of his dreams.

During his preparation, he liked chemistry the least because it “requires more cramming than the application of logic”, Soumitra said.

Suggesting to his peers about the preparation of the entrance exam, he said, “There are many books for preparation in the market, instead of getting lost in the long list, one should pick an author and go deep into it.” For his studies, he claims that he did not follow any strict timetable and instead focused on concept clarity and solving problems of high difficulty and order of thinking each time.

Saumitra is the youngest of three siblings. While his older brother helps his father with the family business, his older sister is an assistant professor. This is the reason why I am where I am, he has inspired me and groomed me in every aspect of life.” His mother is a housewife and father runs a business.
