New Delhi: Security has been beefed up in Mathura following the arrest of two operatives of Al Qaeda-linked Ansar Gajwatul Hind in Lucknow, who were planning attacks at several places across the state, including the temple town. Police claimed that they were planning to create disturbance through pressure cooker bombs in Lucknow and adjoining areas ahead of Independence Day.
The two terrorists, identified as Minhaj Ahmed and Maseeruddin, residents of Lucknow, were arrested by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the state police on Sunday. The network of terrorists was in touch through Telegram and WhatsApp. The police have a hand on some of their chats.
After his arrest, the ATS conducted several raids in various cities of Uttar Pradesh and arrested 12 suspects in the case in the last 24 hours. At least three teams of UP ATS have arrested two suspects in Kanpur.
According to officials, the terrorists were planning to carry out terrorist activities in other cities including Lucknow, Mathura, Varanasi and Ayodhya on Independence Day (August 15). Maps of various cities including Mathura, Varanasi, Ayodhya and places around the Ram temple have been recovered from two al-Qaeda affiliates.
A senior official said that Mathura Police has tightened security at all important places, including Shri Krishna Janmasthan and Thakur Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. Security arrangements are being reviewed at all important places and efforts are being made to ensure that there are no lapses of any kind. Security has been beefed up at all important places including Shri Krishna Janmasthan complex and oil refineries. Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Grover gave this information.
He said, a team of National Security Guard (NSG) closely inspected the security arrangements of Thakur Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan. Police said special police teams are also monitoring the movement of people along the Yamuna Expressway, the Agra-Delhi highway as well as in the cities of Vrindavan, Govardhan and Barsana.
