UP Assembly: Time for discussion on opposition’s demand on price hike ends

The entire Question Hour was washed away in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday as members of the opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress flocked to the Well of the House on the issue of inflation. However, after the supplementary budget was presented, SP and Congress leaders talked about inflation. As soon as the proceedings of the House began at 11 am, members of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress came to the Well of the House and started raising slogans against the government.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ram Govind Choudhary said, “Inflation is skyrocketing and people are feeling upset due to rising prices of petrol, diesel and LPG. SP members came to the well as soon as Chaudhary said this. Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit said, “The state government has nothing to do with inflation. If your ‘rangrang program’ (variety program) is over, then let the House go on.” Question Hour was extended till 12.20 pm. Later, after presenting the supplementary budget, the Samajwadi Party and the Congress sought to draw the government’s attention to the issue.

Ram Govind Chaudhary and Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra, while demanding adjournment of the proceedings of the House, urged for discussion on it. “There is terrible and deadly inflation in the BJP government and everything has become costly. Only public life is cheap. Inflation has caused huge public anger and can assume a disastrous proportion. Therefore, the House should stop all business and discuss this issue.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, people are forced to buy wood for funerals at 10 times the price.”

Responding to statements made by opposition leaders, UP Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi said, “During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has provided free medical treatment to all patients. As far as petrol and diesel prices are concerned, these are governed by the international market. Petrol and diesel prices in Uttar Pradesh are lower than in Jaipur (Rajasthan), Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. Members of the SP and Congress staged a walkout after Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit rejected opposition leaders’ demand for a discussion while adjourning the House.
