Unseasonal rains in parts of Delhi-NCR; hailstorm damages crops in Rajasthan, Gujarat, UP

Traffic slowed down in many parts of Delhi-NCR due to unseasonal rains on Monday evening. The sudden change in weather brought down the temperature, bringing relief from the heat.

Light rain occurred in parts of Delhi in the morning as well. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, predicting heavy to moderate rain with strong winds and cloudburst.

A day earlier, the Meteorological Department had predicted rain and thundershowers in the northwest and eastern states. Hailstorm occurred in many areas of Madhya Pradesh including Jabalpur, Panna, Satna, Khajuraho, Khargone, Khandwa. These also include places where winds blow at a speed of 40 to 80 kmph.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature settled at 17.4 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, while the relative humidity was recorded at 83 per cent at 8.30 am. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 26 degree Celsius.

Standing crops have been damaged by hailstorm in Rajasthan

Due to Western Disturbance, rains continued in parts of Rajasthan on Monday and Mahavirji in Karauli district recorded maximum rainfall of seven cm, the Met department said. There was hailstorm at some places on Sunday, which damaged standing crops in many parts of Rajasthan.

Boli in Sawai Madhopur, Parbatsar in Nagaur, Raipur in Pali recorded 4 cm while Tonk recorded 8 cm of rain during a span of 24 hours.

According to the MeT department, many other places also received less than 3 cm of rainfall during this period. An official of the Meteorological Department said that the effect of Western Disturbance will continue in the areas of Jaipur, Kota, Ajmer and Bharatpur divisions on Monday while the weather will be mainly dry on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Thursday, a new Western Disturbance will be active in the state, due to which rain activities will resume in Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur and Ajmer divisions for a couple of days.

Similar story in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh

Several parts of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh have received unseasonal rains for two consecutive days.
In UP, fields and sown crops were damaged due to heavy hailstorm accompanied by strong wind at Lalitpur in Bundelkhand district. According to the visuals, after the hailstorm, several fields were completely covered with hail. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the officials to carry out relief work in the hailstorm affected areas.

In Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a review meeting on Sunday to take stock of the situation. Several parts of Kutch, Patan, Ahmedabad, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Banaskantha, Surat and other districts received over 15 mm of rain on Saturday evening, while 81 taluks saw rain in the 24 hours till 6 am on Sunday, State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) said.

According to the state government, 111 talukas in 27 districts recorded rainfall ranging from 1 mm to 47 mm, of which 33 talukas in 18 districts received more than 10 mm of rain on Sunday.

Unseasonal rains were also recorded in 27 districts from March 5 to March 9.

An official said the chief minister took a comprehensive review of the situation amid concerns over damage to rabi crops.

They received preliminary information about damage to crops and fruits, particularly in Amreli and Junagadh, and other districts of Saurashtra-Kutch, central and north Gujarat, an official statement said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rain accompanied by wind and thundershowers in parts of north Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch regions over the next five days. Thunderstorm warnings have also been issued for Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Southeast Uttar Pradesh, Coastal Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh.
