Bommai is contesting for the fourth consecutive term from Shiggaon in Haveri district. The Congress has not been able to win this seat since 1999, once considered its stronghold. JD(S) and independent candidates won from here in 1999 and 2004 respectively.

As per the latest trends, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) overtook the Congress in the initial lead, which included postal ballots, the Grand Old Party overtook the BJP as soon as the EVM counting began. The Janata Dal (Secular), whose leader HD Kumaraswamy said it was “not in demand”, now seems to have consolidated his party’s role of ‘kingmaker’.
