Anantnag: An unidentified terrorist was killed in a brief encounter with government forces in the Yaripora area of ​​south Kashmir’s Kulgam district in the early hours of Sunday.

“We are trying to ascertain the identity of the slain terrorist. Some families have been contacted in this regard,” a senior police officer from Kulgam district told Kashmir Reader.

He said the body has been sent for medico-legal formalities. Three terrorists were killed on Saturday after another encounter in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

The encounter started at around 6 am today in Kulgam, when a Bagh area was cordoned off by the forces after receiving information about the presence of terrorists in the area.

“While the cordon was being extended, the terrorists fired indiscriminately, which was duly retaliated, following which the encounter broke out,” the police officer said.

He said one terrorist was killed, while other terrorists believed to be in number two managed to escape from the encounter site.

“After no further links with the terrorists were established, a search operation was launched in the afternoon and the operation was called off,” the official said. He said the terrorists managed to escape.

He said the identity of the slain terrorist, if known by the time, would be mentioned in the police press release about the encounter.

In another incident in the district, suspected terrorists snatched a rifle from a policeman in Khodveni area.

A senior police officer in the area told Kashmir Reader, “The incident took place on Sunday morning near the Shamsipora crossing in Khodveni area.”

He said the suspected militants overpowered the policeman and took away his service rifle AK-47.

“The area was cordoned off and searches were conducted to nab and nab the attackers. Though they managed to escape,” the police officer said, adding that a case has been registered in this regard and further investigation is on.

The policeman whose rifle was snatched has been identified as Mudassir Ahmed, a resident of Devsar area of ​​Kulgam district.
