Unity, Regional Rivalry, PM Candidate And More: Basic Challenges For I.N.D.I.A Alliance

As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, a major challenge has loomed before the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as 26 opposition parties have come together under a banner named ‘INDIA’ – which is short for ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’. While the banner has been unfurled, the road ahead looks tough for this new alliance.

Facing state-level differences and seat adjustments

The most important challenge before the opposition is to manage state-level differences and seat adjustments among the various parties in the alliance. Finding common ground and seat-sharing agreement is crucial to his electoral success. However, even before the elections begin, some parties may face the dilemma of choosing their leaders for the alliance, which could be a potential stumbling block.

Opposition calls for unity

During the two-day meeting held in Bengaluru, the opposition parties unanimously expressed their commitment to preserve the Constitution and democracy, resulting in the formation of an ‘India’ alliance. However, achieving unity while respecting the diverse ideologies and interests of the parties involved is easier said than done. A senior opposition leader said, “We will have to see how we proceed step by step.”

Managing Regional Rivalry

One of the key challenges is in states where opposition parties find themselves as each other’s primary rivals. In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress is facing tough competition from both the Left parties and the Congress. Similarly, Kerala sees the Congress and the Left as direct contenders, while Delhi and Punjab see a one-on-one rivalry between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.

electing a prime ministerial candidate

Another dilemma facing the opposition is the possible delay in announcing a prime ministerial candidate ahead of the elections. Some leaders within the alliance believe that declaring a candidate ahead of the election may not be the best strategy. Instead, they propose to decide on the leader based on the election result.

Although the ‘Bharat’ alliance has started with a common goal of defeating the BJP, it remains to be seen how well it can manage internal differences and regional dynamics to present a united front in the upcoming elections.
