United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern following reports of tsunamis and ash affecting Tonga following the eruption of an undersea volcano near the Pacific nation.

According to the report of the Xinhua news agency, a tsunami warning has been issued in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Japan and America.

Guterres’ deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement: “The United Nations Office in the Pacific is closely monitoring the situation and is on standby to provide assistance when requested. The Secretary-General is grateful to the countries that have already have given their support.” ,

A massive underwater volcano erupted on Friday with plumes reaching more than 19km above sea level, according to Tonga Geological Services.

A cloud of ash and steam reached a distance of about 241 km, an event captured from satellite images shared by various meteorological agencies.

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage due to the lack of connectivity in the country at present.
