Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman on Friday escaped a minimum two-match ban as punishment for his red card after Barcelona drew 0-0 in Cadiz. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) disciplinary opted to suspend the Dutchman for the shortest possible time after sending him off to an argument with officials at the last minute as 10-man Barcelona were confined to a goalless draw. Referee Carlos del Cerro Grande wrote in his report that Coeman was sent “to the fourth official for brazenly protesting, raising his arms, shouting and leaving the technical area, complaining: ‘Hey, the referee. Has to blow the whistle, the referee has to blow the whistle, damn it, he has to blow the whistle’ even though the fourth officer had already warned him to stop protesting the referee’s decisions.”

Koman wanted play to stop because there were two balls on the pitch.

“You are sent to this country for nothing,” Koman said at a post-match press conference.

Koman is under pressure as Barcelona are already seven points behind Liga leaders Real Madrid, although they have a game in hand, and have scored five goals in five league appearances.

He will not be able to sit on the bench as Barcelona host Levante on Sunday and on October 2 when Barcelona visit champions Atlético Madrid.

The disciplinary committee also banned midfielder Frankie de Jong for one match.

The Dutchman was sent off in the 65th minute for a second yellow card in four minutes.
