‘Uncle’ is saying don’t marry: Owaisi taunts PM Modi over legal age of marriage for women

New Delhi: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue of raising the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years.

“Modi ji, when did you become our uncle? ‘Uncle’ just sits here and there asking questions, now ‘uncle’ is saying don’t get married’: AIMIM chief quipped as quoted by news agency ANI.

Asaduddin Owaisi was addressing a public meeting in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh when he appealed to Muslims to promote their political strength, leadership and participation.

“I am here to appeal to all of you that 19 per cent Muslims of UP need their political strength, leadership and participation, so that our youth can get respect, education and atrocities and discrimination can be stopped. When will the Muslims wake up?” he asked.

In Laxmipur Kheri violence case he alleged that “MoS (Home) Ajay Mishra Teni hatched a conspiracy and as a result, his son killed 4 farmers. But PM Modi does not remove Teni because he does not want to disturb the Brahmin society of UP.

Raising the issue of raising the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years, Asaduddin Owaisi said: “The Center has raised the legal age of marriage for women to 21. As per the law, you can have sex with a woman.” Can have. At the age of 18, but cannot marry her at the age of 18? What is the problem with marriage to PM Modi?

Taking a jibe at PM Modi, he said: “Now BJP will say that Owaisi and Muslims do not talk for the benefit of women. Modi ji, when did you become our uncle? ‘Uncle’ just sitting here and there asks questions, now ‘uncle’ is saying don’t marry’

Union Cabinet approved the proposal, SP MPs gave controversial remarks

Earlier this week, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to raise the minimum age of marriage for women from 18 to 21. The government may introduce a bill in Parliament during the ongoing winter session.

Some politicians have expressed their dissatisfaction with the move, including two Samajwadi Party MPs, who on Friday shared their controversial opinion on the matter.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Samajwadi Party MP Syed Tufail Hasan said: “Girls should be married when they attain reproductive age”. “If a mature girl gets married at the age of 16 then there is nothing wrong in it. If she can vote at the age of 18, why can’t she get married?” When asked if he thinks the age of marriage for girls should be lowered below 18, he replied.

Another SP MP Shafiqur Rehman said that India is a poor country and everyone wants their daughters to get married at the earliest.

Rahman said that “as far as a girl’s education is concerned, it happens at her home as well, and can happen at her in-laws’ house too”, expressing that she would not support the bill in Parliament.

Following his alleged remarks about women being more “inferior” when the age of marriage was raised, he clarified that he had not used the word “inferiority” and that his statement was misrepresented.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav had distanced his party from the controversial remarks made by both the MPs.

When asked about the controversial comments, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said: “Samajwadi Party has nothing to do with any such statement. Samajwadi Party is a progressive party and has started schemes for the progress of girls and women.
