Unable to pay hospital bill, man dies by suicide in Telangana

New Delhi: Unable to pay the hospital bill, a man committed suicide by hanging himself in a private hospital in Telangana.

According to a report in news agency IANS, the deceased, identified as 46-year-old Marri Bapu, was undergoing treatment at the hospital as he had consumed insecticide after his son was denied a job, as promised by the authorities. when he acquired his land for Kakatiya Thermal. Power Project (KTPP) at Mahbubpalli village.

The hospital had said that they would discharge the patient only after paying Rs 60,000. After his family failed to arrange the amount, Bapu committed suicide in the hospital ward on Thursday.

Bapu, who was working as a laborer, was wandering from door to door to get a job for his son. He had gone to KTPP and urged the authorities to provide the promised job to his son. However, with no positive response, he consumed insecticide on 1 April after which he was taken to a private hospital in Bhupalpally.

Bapu is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. His son said that the authorities had acquired his two acres of land in 2006 and promised him a job in return.

Meanwhile, leaders of various political parties demanded action against the hospital for pressurizing Bapu’s family to pay the bills. He also staged a dharna against KTPP demanding compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the bereaved family.

Notably, the authorities in undivided Andhra Pradesh acquired 900 acres of land from 750 farmers in 2006 and, as compensation, the government promised a job to one member of each affected family.

According to locals, only 550 people were given employment as the children of the remaining farmers were either minors or not eligible at that time.
