Ukraine’s parliament calls Russian military action a ‘genocide’

Ukraine’s parliament on Thursday backed a resolution recognizing the actions of the Russian military in the country as “genocide”.

“The actions taken by the Armed Forces of Russia are not only a crime of aggression, but also the pursuit of the goal of systematic and persistent destruction of the Ukrainian people, depriving them of their identity and their right to self-determination and independent development.” The text was approved by a majority of 363 MPs.

An online statement said, “There is a need for urgent recognition of the actions taken by the Armed Forces of Russia during the final phase of Russia’s armed offensive against Ukraine, which began as the genocide of the Ukrainian people on February 24, 2022.” happened.”

The Ukrainian parliament’s resolution also called for sending appeals to foreign governments, parliaments and the United Nations to recognize Russia’s war as a genocide.

US President Joe Biden this week said in remarks echoed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Premier Boris Johnson that Russia’s actions against Ukrainians amounted to genocide.

But French President Emmanuel Macron, also backed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, refused to put the word “genocide” in a stance that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky considered “painful”.

Macron said on Thursday that accusing Russia of committing genocide in Ukraine could spark war, as he defended his decision not to use the word.
