He told that Pankaj Kumar Mahato, a fourth year student of his own college and resident of Bokaro, is stranded in a shelter home in Romania along with other Indians. They are waiting for their turn to board the flight home. It was his good fortune that he was able to enter Romania and obtain flight.
Recounting his ordeal, Kumar said, “After entering the Romanian border on Monday (February 28), we boarded one of the buses to rescue us at the shelter home. But everyone insisted on going to the airport and the driver dropped everyone at the airport. After that, as soon as the Indian flight arrived, we boarded it.”
He said, “It was a nightmare because the border was very crowded. The Romanian guards rarely opened the gates. They also used to fire in the air to control the crowd. He along with others emptied into the open the night and the day before. I had spent two degrees Celsius in low temperatures. After crossing the border, my fear subsided and I thought I would be home now.”
He said that he, along with three of his friends, traveled 350 km from Vinnitsa to the Romanian border by bus. He said, “If I had not had the courage, I would have been stuck there like many Indians. Indians were advised by the embassy to carry the flag of the country with them during their visit. We had the flag of our country there. Biggest support to all.”
Kumar had gone to Ukraine on November 10, 2021 to pursue a medical degree. He said that he would definitely go back to continue his studies after the war ended.
