LONDON: British Trade Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan will on Tuesday implore her G20 counterparts to end the rally on the back of market-distorting practices and WTO reform.
Trevelyan, who took office in a ministerial reshuffle last month, will pick up where his predecessor Liz Truss left off: Britain seeks to carve out a new post-Brexit role for itself while arguing for an equal opportunity on international trade .
“We cannot and will not allow British businesses that play by the rules to be damaged and undermined by the market-distorting practices of other countries,” he said in a statement ahead of the G20 trade ministers meeting in Italy.
“Today’s meeting is a great opportunity to unite our G20 partners and build alliances that can protect the global trading system and help bring it into the 21st century.”
After spending years arguing that the freedom to strike free-trade deals outside the EU would be one of the main benefits of Brexit, the government has repeatedly called for modernizing the global trade rulebook.
Trevelyan would hit out at “harmful and perverse” industrial subsidies – a criticism his department had previously used to single out China. China is a member of the G20 and is seen by some to benefit from WTO rules that regard it as a developing economy.
Italy’s prime minister said on Friday he was confident the G20 leaders’ meeting at the end of October would reach a strong commitment to reform the WTO.
