A UK man has credited an Apple Watch for pointing medics towards an undiagnosed heart condition.

Adam Croft, a 36-year-old writer for Flitwick in Bedfordshire, UK, woke up to find that his Apple device had been alerting him throughout the night that his heart was in atrial fibrillation, reports the BBC.

“It’s not a feature I ever expected to use,” he was quoted as saying.

In an interview, Croft said that he got up from the couch one evening and was “a little dizzy” but when he went to the kitchen to get some water he “immediately felt the world coming in.”

“I managed to land on the floor and ended up in a pool of cold sweat,” he said.

The next morning, he woke up to find that his watch was ticking every two hours alerting him that his heart was in a rhythm known as atrial fibrillation—and that he should seek medical attention.

“I called 111 (the UK medical helpline) who said to get to hospital within the hour,” Croft said.

Additional testing at Bedford Hospital in the UK confirmed that Croft was in atrial fibrillation. The report states that Croft claims that he would not have gone to the hospital if he had not received the alert from his Apple Watch.

In addition, the author claimed to have experienced “slight flutters” of the heart before his watch had missed it, but these had not occurred in months.

He “never had any pain or symptoms that I thought were serious.”

The report states that after tests confirmed atrial fibrillation, doctors placed Croft on blood thinners.

He will now undergo a cardioversion procedure, which involves the use of “quick, low-energy shocks to restore a regular heart rate”.

Croft concluded by saying: “The clock will just keep on ticking.”
