UK faces protests over Indian universities not joining new graduation scheme

The UK government is facing a backlash after none of the Indian universities joined a new scheme for graduates.

No Indian university has made it to the UK government’s new scheme for graduates.

In a new scheme, the UK government has announced that graduates from the world’s top 50 non-UK universities can work in the UK under the new High Potential Individual (HPI) visa. Even though none of the Indian universities featured, two universities in Mainland China and two universities in Hong Kong made it to the list.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Peking University and Tsinghua University were on the list. The Indian Express reported that the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a new entrant in the list.

However, no Indian university has made it to the list. The list released for 2020-2021, when the first coronavirus cases were reported worldwide, included three Chinese universities, but added no Indian universities. The following year the number of Chinese universities increased to four, while Indian universities still did not manage to find a place.

The UK government has been called out on the issue, as none of the IITs made it to the top 50 list.

Times of India reported.

Eligibility criteria require an institution to be in the top 50 of at least “at least two of the three ranking lists produced by QS, the Times Higher Education and Academic Ranking of World Universities”.

Although the scheme is open to all, the list of eligible universities does not include universities in Africa, Latin America and South Asia.
