‘Ugly Girls Can Be Married-Off:’ Nursing College Sociology Book States Merits of Dowry, Draws Flack

The college-level sociology textbook has come under heavy scrutiny from netizens for allegedly justifying the practice of dowry. As a justification for dowry, the book lists some “advantages” of the practice. The first point suggests that the practice of dowry is helpful in setting up new homes with cradles, mattresses, TVs, fans and other gifts. It also calls dowry a share of the girl’s share in the property of her parents.

The book, which is part of the Nursing Curriculum, claims to be in accordance with the Indian Nursing Council’s curriculum that the practice of dowry has helped in the spread of education among girls. A snapshot of the controversial portion was posted online by a Twitter user, along with details of the book and author.

Describing this as an indirect benefit, the book states that parents are now encouraging girls to complete education and get employment so that they have to pay less dowry.

The last point in these “qualities” states that even “ugly looking girls” can be married off to good or ugly looking boys using dowry. Page number 122 of this book by TK Indrani, chapter 6 of the Sociology textbook for nurses contains controversial points.

Netizens criticized the book for the alleged problematic content and asked the authorities to rectify the mistakes in it. “Is this the way we plan to get rid of ‘dowry’ as a social menace? When we give so called benefits of dowry to the students! [Please] Please rectify this situation as soon as possible,” wrote one user in his response, while others demanded legal action against the publishers of the book.

Expressing dismay at the content of the book, a user said that at this rate in the future, there might be a book justifying ‘Sati’.

However, this is not the first time a textbook has received criticism for problematic material. Earlier, a children’s textbook from West Bengal was reprimanded for carrying part derogatory to black people. Letters are presented in the book along with related words and images. it defined ‘u’ Ugly with illustration of a black boy next to it.
