The UGC has advised the HEIs to function appropriately in their respective institutions as per the norms laid down by the Commission. The curriculum aims to provide opportunities for community engagement to students

University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested active support from higher education Institute (HEI) to implement two-credit courses for community engagement and social responsibility and other guidelines and recommendations. The Commission has advised the HEIs to act appropriately in their individual institutions as per the rules laid down by the Commission. Community Engagement and Social Responsibility The course aims to provide opportunities for community engagement to the students.

The Community Engagement course will enhance students’ understanding of rural culture and lifestyle, as well as their ability to identify the causes of hardship and poverty. Students will be encouraged to suggest solutions by applying classroom knowledge to real world situations.

A total of two credits will be awarded for the course, one for field work and the other for classroom and tutorial. During the 30-hour course, students will have to spend at least 50% of the time on the field. On the SWAYAM site swayam.gov.in, UGC has created Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on Community Engagement and Social Responsibility which will be accessible soon. SWAYAM provides a great platform for interdisciplinary learning and hundreds of UGC approved online courses.

As part of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) in India, the UGC had earlier on February 28 sought comments and suggestions on the proposed National Curriculum Framework and Guidelines for Promoting Social Responsibility and Community Engagement in HEIs. UGC formulates final guidelines for promoting social responsibility and community engagement effectively in HEIs India 2.0 after considering the comments and suggestions received.
