UGC allows students to pursue 2 degrees at the same time, can also enroll in different colleges

From the coming academic year, students will be allowed to pursue two degrees at the same time. This will be applicable not only to freshers joining the first year but also to those who are already enrolled in the degree. in which University Grants Commission (UGC) Called a ‘two-degree programme’, students will not only have the opportunity to combine two streams or two courses, but can also choose to study in two different colleges at the same time.

Students who are in the third or second year of the degree can also enroll in the first year of the second course. As per the UGC, the enrollment will depend on any stream, college or year the student is currently in. Addressing the media, UGC President M Jagadesh Kumar said, “Hopefully with the NEP, more and more universities will open up and allow flexibility to the students”.

Students will have the option to add another degree, diploma or certificate program to their existing degree, however, they will have to be eligible for the admission policies of each university and course. For example, if admission to one course is given on the basis of JEE score and another on the basis of CUET, then students have to clear both the entrance exams. Universities will have the option to select the admission process. The UGC will issue detailed guidelines on this very soon.

As announced in the new National Education Policy (NEP) and to allow students to acquire multiple skills, the UGC is coming up with new guidelines to enable a candidate to simultaneously pursue two-degree programs in physical mode. be allowed to proceed. UGC President M Jagadesh Kumar while addressing the media said, degree can be obtained either from the same or from different universities.

Students can take courses from the college or university in which they are enrolled or at any other university across the country. As per the new schedule, students can take one course in online mode and another offline or in any other combination of their choice.

Students can pursue courses of only one academic level under this program. This means that two courses offered after 12th class like B.Com and B.Sc or B.Tech and Diploma can be taken at the same time, however, one cannot opt ​​for a UG and a PG course at the same time.

The idea is to allow more students to get into top colleges. “Usually 3-4% of students who apply to a college get admitted in it. We want to empower some of the best universities in the country to start online courses as well. Online courses ensure unlimited number of seats. We are also planning to set up a National Digital University, which will also be declared an Institute of National Importance and will offer online programs.”

Flexibility is available only for lecture-based courses offered in UG, PG, Advertisement Diploma courses are allowed to be included under this programme. Students cannot do two PhDs simultaneously.
