UEFA acquits Nasser al-Khelaifi of misconduct in Champions League, one-match ban for Leonardo

UEFA acquitted its executive committee member Nasser al-Khelaiyi on Friday, despite his club Paris Saint-Germain being found guilty of misconduct for clashing with match officials after losing the Champions League.

PSG president Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Leonardo were involved in heated scenes demanding match officials question the decisions about Real Madrid’s 3-1 win in March.

Karim Benzema’s second-half hat-trick lifted Madrid to an impressive comeback at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, giving PSG a 3–2 aggregate defeat in the Round of 16.

The defeat left PSG still in search of a first European title in a season when the Qatar-owned club added Lionel Messi to a superstar forward line up with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

Media reports from the stadium said that Al-Khelai had to calm down after he tried to enter the locker room of Netherlands referee Danny McKeely, who was later selected by FIFA to act. World Cup in Qatar.

UEFA published its disciplinary committee’s decision late on Friday, confirming allegations of “violating the basic rules of civilized conduct” and “uncivilized conduct”.

However, a one-match ban from a UEFA competition match was the only ban for Leonardo. The former PSG player and Brazil international was fired by the club last month.

UEFA did not provide a reason why al-Khelaiah was not cited in the disciplinary statement.

Al-Khelaiyi joined UEFA’s executive committee representing clubs in 2019 and was promoted to head the influential European Club Association last year after the unsuccessful launch of the Super League.

That project, challenging the authority of UEFA and the Champions League, was led by Madrid and other storied clubs, but PSG refused to join.
