India Under-19 players celebrate after their 45-run win against South Africa at Providence Stadium, Guyana during the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022.

Highlight

  • India’s left-arm spinner- Vicky Ostwal was given the Player of the Match award for his fifty.
  • Ostwal has become the seventh Indian to take five wickets in the Under-19 World Cup.

Riding on Vicky Ostwal’s five-for and Raj Bawa’s four, India beat South Africa by 45 runs in their opening match of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022. India’s captain- Yash Dhul did not contribute significantly with his knock of 82 runs. But it took three crucial catches to give India an early win at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Saturday.

Unlucky with the coin, India were put to bat first by South Africa, who fired on all cylinders and removed the openers – Angkrish Raghuvanshi (5) and Harnoor Singh (1), within six overs. It was Yash Dhul’s 71-run partnership with Shaik Rashid (31) that stabilized the Indian side. Apart from this, Nishant Sindhu (27) and Kaushal Tambe (35) made significant contributions to help India post 232 runs at the end of 46.5 overs.

Proteas left-arm sharp- Effieve Manyanda was instrumental in interrupting the boys in the blue as they removed both the openers. Matthew Bost and Dewald Brevis together took five wickets to trouble the Indian batsmen.

In reply, South Africa got off to a poor start as Ethan John Cunningham was sent off for a duck. Dewald Brevis (65) brought hope to the South African camp when he shared a 58-run stand with opener Valentin Kittime (25) and walked away.

The Boys in Green jumped into the driver’s seat when Brevis, along with skipper George Van Heerden (36), smashed 55 runs for his team before Yash Dhul took an impressive catch at mid-off, sending them to the pavilion. Thereafter, the Proteas quickly lost wickets and were staggered for 187.

From India’s line-up, Vicky Ostwal grabbed the headlines with the ball for his five-wicket haul (5/28), while Raj Bawa returned with a four-wicket haul (4/47).

Yash Dhull’s India will now take on Ireland on January 19 in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022.
