U-19 WC Heroes: Maharashtra Police ATS officer watching son Kaushal Tambe fulfill his cherished dream

Like hundreds of others who played in the very competitive Kanga League during Mumbai’s monsoons, Sunil Tambe also dreamed of making it big in professional cricket.

But as hundreds of dreams are crushed moment by moment in Mumbai, Tambe knew it was a rough road with no guarantees as he decided to focus on education.

On Saturday evening, the current assistant commissioner of the Maharashtra Police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) must have tried to hide a whole range of emotions that he felt when he saw his teenage son Kaushal play India U-19 in the World Cup. He was seen taking a wicket for final against england

“I originally played varsity level and Kangana level cricket for Mumbai, but I could not make a career in cricket. I wanted my son to do something in cricket and he did.”

So has Kaushal ever worried about the nature of his job and his safety while dealing with criminals? Tambe, whose wife is a lawyer, said, “No, Kaushal was never worried about my safety.”

It was Tambe Sr.’s passion that his son quickly imbibed and aspired to become a cricketer.

“To make him fond of sports, when he was three and a half years old, we admitted him to skating. He did well for four years and won several national medals, and then when he was nine, we admitted him to PYC for cricket, where he got the basics from Pawan Kulkarni.”

“Then we applied for selection to the Tal Cricket Academy (CCA) and he was included as a bowler. So when I asked Surendra Bhave (former national selector and Ranji legend) and Harshal Pathan why they included him as bowler, they said we know, he bats well, but he will become a good spinner . Whatever he is today is because of the rhythm,” Tambe Sr. recalled.

So, what was the turning point of Kaushal’s career and becoming the captain of the U16 West Zone team as his father says.

“In 2019, Kaushal, who studied at the renowned SP College, was appointed as the captain of the West Zone, after which he was selected for the NCA camp where he got to learn many things and I think that was the turning point, said the senior. said. Constable

Kaushal has come up the ranks by playing age group level cricket.

“In 2017, he scored 169 against Saurashtra and then against Gujarat, he scored a double century, becoming the first person from the state to do so in his age group, followed by a triple century at the under-16 level, which is the highest for Maharashtra. There was a history to a player and then he didn’t look back,” Tambe recounted his son’s stellar performance as the punch was delighted.

Kaushal, who is an off-spinner now directed by Harshad Patil and currently trains in two academies, was also supported by his school ‘The Bishops’ and now SP College.

He has always got the support of the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) and Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja are his idols as far as fitness is concerned.

Kaushal is an avid sports autobiography reader and loves to read about the lives of Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni.

After hours of his duty, Tambe helped Kaushal hone his skills, setting up a practice ground at his residence in Pune.

Last but not least, Kaushal’s mother, who is a lawyer, sacrificed her professional career for her son and is now reaping the benefits.

Another mentor to Kaushal who played a key role in his life was veteran cricket journalist Sunandan Lele, who has been one of his mentors.
