Pablo Picasso said, “Inspiration is there, but you must find it by working.” We have come across many stories of how a person overcame all odds to stand on top. Similar is the story of IAS officer Anju Sharma. His journey from being a below average student to clearing UPSC in his very first attempt is undoubtedly inspirational. Anju had failed in chemistry and economics in class 10th and 12th. He passed with distinction in all other subjects except these two. He claimed that only achievement can set you up for failure.

But today, she believes that these two incidents in her life made her who she is today. At the age of 22, he cracked India’s toughest exam, UPSC. In an interview Anju said that preparing for your exam at the last moment will lead to panic and frustration. Sharing an incident from her school days, the IAS officer said, “During my pre-boards, I had a lot of chapters to cover and it was almost after dinner when I started panicking because I was not ready and I knew I was going to fail. Everyone around me stresses on the fact that class 10th performance is important as it determines our higher studies.”

Anju recalled how her mother supported and encouraged her through stressful times in her life. He also found that one should not rely on studying at the last minute, so he started studying early for his college exams, which helped him win a gold medal for his college. He graduated from Rajasthan with B.Sc and MBA. Due to this strategy, she was able to clear the UPSC exam in her very first attempt. She completed her course very early and was listed among the top scorers of IAS.

In 1991, Anju started working in Rajkot as an assistant collector. He is presently working as the Principal Secretary to the Secretariat, Gandhinagar, Govt. Education Department (Higher & Technical Education). In his three decades of work, he has held various positions including DDO Baroda, Gandhinagar, District Collector and NRHM in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Government of India.
