State media reported on Wednesday that two people were killed and more than 50 were trapped in a massive coal mine collapse in northern China’s Inner Mongolia region.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered search and rescue efforts at the site and Premier Li Keqiang called for a swift investigation into the cause of the accident.

“We must make every effort to rescue the missing and treat the injured,” Xi said.

The accident occurred at an open pit mine located in Alxa Ligu and operated by Xinjing Coal Mining Company.

Inner Mongolia is one of the country’s top coal producers, and like other regions in China has been producing at a higher rate over the past year under government calls to boost local supplies and stabilize prices.
