Two intra-squad games for Team India in Durham; No official request by BCCI for warm-up games

As the BCCI fails to get a practice match for Team India in England, the latter seems to be the only loser. India was clearly not ready for the WTC final, and it showed in their performance. Now the England Test series is approaching and there is no practice match in the pipeline for the team. They play only two intra-squad matches at Durham.

According to a report in the Times of India, the ECB is yet to receive a request for a practice match ahead of the five-Test series. An ECS spokesperson confirmed this. “As far as we are concerned, their schedule remains the same. They have a camp in Durham from 15 July and will play a four-day intra-squad match between their extended sports contingent. We do not expect this to change,” an ECB spokesperson instructed TOI.

Virat Kohli regretted the lack of practice matches after the heavy defeat. But this may be due to the stringent COVID-19 regulations in the UK. He said, ‘Even if they had asked, India could not have played the practice match. We spoke with the UK government to train them during their quarantine. The other Red Country entrance has to undergo a tough quarantine with a 20-minute walk a day in the car park,” said a source close to the team.

“What’s wrong with that? In a practice match, if Kohli gets out, there’s no way he can practice on the center wicket. He has to bat in the nets. Whereas in an intra-squad game, even if you’re in the nets, you’re going to have to bat in the nets.” Get out early, you can continue to bat and get valuable practice against the best bowlers in your team,” justified a former India cricketer.
