In Secunderabad on March 4, two trains will move towards each other at full speed, one with the Railway Minister and the other with the Chairman of the Railway Board. But due to ‘Kavach’, both the trains will not collide. ‘Kavach’, which literally means armor, is being promoted by the Railways as the world’s cheapest automatic train collision protection system.
Indigenously developed Automated Train Protection (ATP) system has been developed to help Railways achieve the target of “Zero Accidents”. Kavach is designed to stop a train automatically when it notices another train on the same line within stipulated distance.

Senior officials said that when the digital system notices any manual error like “jumping” of the red signal or any other malfunction, the trains will also stop automatically. He said that once implemented, it would cost Rs 50 lakh per kilometer to run, while it would cost around Rs 2 crore worldwide.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav will be in Secunderabad to be a part of the trial run of the system on the Sanathnagar-Shankarpally section. “The Railway Minister and the CRB (Chairman of the Railway Board) will participate in the test to be held on March 4. We will show how the system works in three situations – face-to-face collision, rear-side collision and signal is in danger (SPADES) passed,” said the officer.
A Signal in Danger (SPAD) is passed when a train passes a stop-signal when it is not permitted to do so. The ‘Kavach’ controls the speed of the train by automatic application of brakes in case the loco pilot fails to do so.
“It works on the principle of continuous updating of the movement using high frequency radio communication. It is also compliant with SIL-4 (Safety Integrity Level – 4) which is the highest level of safety certification.

Announced in the Union Budget for 2022 as a part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, 2,000 km of rail network is planned to be brought under indigenous world-class technology ‘Kavach’ for safety and capacity addition in 2022-23.
