Two doses of Covaxin, even for Covid-cured people who should be fully vaccinated, says center

A Union Health Ministry official said on Saturday that to be considered a fully vaccinated person, even after recovering from Covid-19, two doses of the Covid vaccine- Covaxin one is a must.

A recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) states that unlike non-infected people, who must take two doses, a single dose of Covaxin may be sufficient to protect those recovering from COVID-19 infection. To be completely safe, Times of India (TOI) Report states.

The study found that those infected with COVID-19 and taking a single dose of Covaxin showed a similar immune response to participants who had never been infected with a COVID-19 infection and received both doses of the vaccine. It was published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.

However, the officials clarified that so far there has been no change in the vaccination dosage and no information has been issued in this regard.

The official told TOI that as per the prescribed format, two doses should be taken for complete vaccination post-Covid infection and since there is no change in the protocol, there will be no change in the Co-Win app.

Officials also said that both the vaccine doses would also be ideal for already infected persons for full immunization. ICMR senior epidemiologist Dr Samiran Panda told The Times of India that complete vaccination requires two doses, and should be followed.

ICMR conducted a study titled ‘Antibody response to BBV152 vaccine in persons previously infected with SARS-CoV-2: A pilot study, on 114 healthcare professionals and frontline workers who took Covaxin shots between February and May 2021’ .

The study also noted that according to preliminary data, a single dose of BBV152-induced humoral immunity in previously infected individuals was equivalent to two doses of the vaccine in infection-naive (non-infected) individuals.
