Twitter may waive the $1,000/month payment requirement for the top 10,000 organizations with the highest number of followers.

Twitter is going to remove the ‘legacy’ verified checkmark today, April 1st. If individuals or organizations want to keep their blue or gold checkmarks – they must pay for Twitter Blue or Twitter Verification for Organizations, which cost $8 and $1,000, respectively.

However, according to a report from The New York Times via The Verge, it appears that Twitter may exempt the top 10,000 organizations with the most followers from this payment requirement.

To keep their gold checkmark, organizations will need to subscribe to Twitter Verification for Organizations by default—paying $1,000 per month plus an additional $50 for each associated account. For example, if organization ‘X’ wants to verify three of its journalists, it will have to pay $1,150 per month. However, this will not be the case for the top 10,000 organizations based on the number of followers they have.

So, if your organization doesn’t meet this stringent requirement and being verified on Twitter is important to you, your only option is to pay $1,000 per month. While this may not be an issue for some of the world’s most trusted news outlets, or large companies like Apple, it can be a daunting task for those who cannot afford it.

For smaller brands and non-publishers, such as emerging startups—dealing with impersonation can be an even bigger challenge—as was evident when Twitter Blue was launched. It will be interesting to see how Twitter handles this issue once the ‘legacy’ verified check mark is removed, which remains to be speculated about.
