Twitter begins testing ‘Shop module’ on brand profile pages

Twitter will begin allowing businesses to display products for sale at the top of their profile pages, the social networking company said Wednesday, as it seeks to gain a slice of the lucrative online shopping world. The San Francisco-based company is following in the footsteps of bigger rival Facebook, which last year opened a “shop” feature to let consumers buy products directly through Facebook and Instagram.

Twitter said it would begin testing the new shopping feature with “a handful of brands” in the United States. Users can scroll through the carousel of products at the top of the brand’s profile. Customers can tap on a product, and then make a payment via the retailer’s website.

The trial is a new attempt to offer purchases on Twitter. The company previously experimented with “Buy Now” buttons and product pages in 2015.
