Why did Thackeray delete the earlier tweet? Why did he change his stand within hours of his first tweet?

These questions are still unanswered.

Thackeray’s stand that a Marathi-speaking candidate from any party should speak for the Marathi-speaking people of Karnataka in the state assembly had angered the ‘Maharashtra Integration Committee’. Responding to this, the youth wing of the committee expressed its anger on Twitter.

The tweet from ‘Maharashtra Ekikaran Yuva Samiti’ read: “We will fight for the dream of ‘United Maharashtra’ together with Belgaum. We will also try to make Marathi speaking candidates of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti win. But your tweet shows That you are supporting a state which is trying to destroy Marathi culture. You are an experienced politician and you should understand what is good and what is bad.

Within hours of his tweet, Thackeray put out a new tweet in support of the Maharashtra Integration Committee.

The tweet said: “Karnataka will vote on May 10. I urge my Marathi brothers and sisters in the border areas to vote unitedly for the Maharashtra Integration Committee candidates.” Candidates of other parties may be Marathi but after getting elected they will not raise your concerns and issues in Vidhan Bhavan against strangulation of Marathi language or injustice being done to Marathi people in border areas…”

“I strongly believe that you should respect the language and culture of the state you belong to. For many generations, the brothers living in the border area have respected the Kannada language and culture here. But still if the government there is going to harass Marathi people, trying to strangle Marathi language, then it will not be tolerated. No matter which party’s government comes there, there is no difference in their behaviour. Therefore, the legislature should have Marathi speaking legislators, who would represent the Marathi identity of the region, who would raise their voice for the issues of the Marathi people.
