Tuticorin Police Firing: ‘Can We Kill People And Throw Money At Them That We’re Done,’ Asks Madras HC Chennai News – Times of India

Madurai: The Madras High Court on Friday said that no one has been booked even three years after the Tuticorin Police claimed 13 lives of unarmed anti-Sterlite protesters.
“It is somewhat worrying that the state, through its police, opened fire on unarmed protesters and no one was booked for three years after the incident. It cannot be good for a civilized society governed by constitutional principles that We only have to throw money at the families. “A Division Bench of the Chief Justice” to close the incident of further possible brutality and excessive police action of the victims. The court said that though the state has removed the nuisance, a large part with regard to punishment still remains unanswered. “Can we kill people and throw money at them and say we’re done? Is that the society we want to build…. Throwing money at some people and everything else is cool has been,” it was observed verbally.
The court said orally that the large part regarding punishment should also be answered in order to prevent incidents: tuticorin police firing in future.
The judges observed while giving directions National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) submits the report of its team investigating police firing on anti-Sterlite protesters in Tuticorin in 2018. Tamil Nadu The government will present the interim report of the Justice (Retd) Aruna Jagadeesan Commission.
The court passed the order on a plea seeking a direction to the NHRC to reopen the case relating to the police firing incident.
